Back in the saddle

Home again, after being in Mexico twice in the past month. ICE's concerts in Morelia, Michoacan were truly inspiring, and the students at the Conservatorio de las Rosas (the first and oldest North American conservatory) were fantastic to work with--eager, bright, and totally game for everything we asked of them. At the RADAR festival in Mexico City, my concert with the great trumpeter Jon Nelson was a real experience. The hall was decorated with an enormous Diego Rivera mural, and it's definitely the most unique stage I've ever played on. My piece's premiere--"Fallow Season (JLG in memoriam)" was an experiment which paid off--a reversal of the Berio trumpet Sequenza, with the offstage trumpet reflecting the activity of the piano in a series of slow ostinati. Thanks for rolling with the punches, Jon!
