katchikatchi the stars
ICEfest in Chicago is nearly at an end, and it was a wonderful, inspiring week. I only wish I could have been there for all of it. My Messiaen performance at Columbia College with Tony Arnold was very moving–we hope to do Harawi (from which the title of this blog post comes) in New York very soon! As Tony remarked in our pre-concert talk, so much of the piece is literally space-music: music which approximates the visuals of twinkling stars, or of moving planets, of buzzing circling atoms in space.
Tony and I will be doing one piece–an old favorite, Thomas Ades’ Life Story–at John Zorn’s club The Stone on Tuesday, and many more great things are coming up. Finding time to practice is the challenge now, especially with the temptation of beautiful late-September weather.
